That Film
Well, I saw it today and it's just as good as you've heard; possibly better than that, even. The greatest actor of their generation, forcing an emotional impact straight through all the artifice and melodrama that go (perhaps rightfully) with the role. The explosion of passion and emotion seen both as power and as terror. The deft repetition of the three-characters story element, and (in a way) of the love triangle motif; the simultaneous rescue and celebration of source material too often relegated to marginal demographics or worse yet associated purely with camp. The classic, even Shakespearean, architecture of the plot arc.

What else? The music, of course; the timeless set design; the gorgeous location; the grace notes for hard-core fans; the costumes at once believable and iconic.

Are there flaws? Sure; the choreography isn't up to the Asian best-of-breed work, and the director doesn't always know how to shoot that choreography reliably, depending more on establishing shots and (justifiably) on solid acting and character development work instead.

Oh, and Pierce Brosnan really can't sing.

Neither could Abba.

It was a very, very enjoyable film. I don't think that I was surprised so much as happily confirmed in my hopes. If that makes any sense whatsoever.

Conversely, a couple I know who are big into ABBA were unimpressed. I'll have to interrogate one when I see him next.

But, does it convey the Bergmanian Dissociation with traditional mores that the source material evokes?

It was a feat of some discipline to force myself not to skip down to the zinger at the end. Well played.

Hee!
Just goes to show that there are only seven plots.

One key difference between Teh Moveez: in the one you describe, the enunciation was so clear that I was finally able definitively discern that the lyric is "you can dance/you can jive" as opposed to what I've heard in my head for the last *mumble* years -- "you can dance/you can die".

What?

Lovely. OT, do you have any intention of going to see Mongol? Having seen almost nothing of it so far, I'm still harbouring hopes of it being non-laughable, and not merely visually gorgeous.

Mongol is indeed worth seeing and well above laughable. If you may remember, it was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Academy Award.

I actually like ABBA (do I need a 12 step program for that?) and the stage show "Mamma Mia" (which I saw in LV). It's not my "favorite" or a "must see", but I definitely enjoyed it.

The singing in the movie by the "stars" kind of made the movie not work for me. The lesser knowns (who were probably cast for the singing ability and not just for their household name talent) did well enough that I think if the whole movie had been a "no-name" cast, I would have enjoyed it fine.

The plot for "Mamma Mia" has always felt "forced" to me (as one would expect if you are trying to write a script to force a bunch of Abba songs into), but it did it the job well enough that I was cool with it anyway.

I honestly think that Musicals are going to become the next wave comic book adaptation movement.
